How to Make Shaved Ice at Home (Without a Fancy Machine)
You need less equipment than you'd think.
What you'll need
Homemade shaved ice won't quite match a pro block-shaver, but it gets impressively close with basic gear.
- A block of clear ice frozen slowly in a container (or big cubes in a pinch)
- A countertop ice shaver, or a strong blender for 'snow' style
- Simple fruit syrups (see our syrup guide)
- Fresh fruit, cut small, and any chewy toppings you love
Getting it fluffy
Let your ice block temper on the counter for five minutes before shaving — ice that's a touch softer shaves into snow instead of shards. Shave in a steady motion and don't pack it down; pile it loose and tall.
Flavor after shaving, not before, so the syrup soaks down through the ribbons.
