Clear Ice at Home: How to Freeze a Shaved-Ice Block

Why clear ice matters
Cloudy ice is full of trapped air and minerals that freeze last in the center, creating weak spots that shave into crumbs. Clear ice is dense and uniform, so it peels into clean ribbons.
The fix is 'directional freezing' — freezing from the top down so impurities get pushed out instead of trapped.
The cooler method
Fill a small insulated cooler (no lid) with water and put it in your freezer. The insulation makes the water freeze slowly from the top, leaving the top few inches crystal clear.
Pull it before it fully freezes, cut off the cloudy bottom, and you've got a shave-ready block.
