Shaved Ice vs Snow Cone: What's Actually Different?

It's all in the ice

A snow cone is made from crushed or pelleted ice — crunchy little nuggets that hold syrup on the surface and slide to the bottom of the cup. Shaved ice is shaved from a solid block into ribbons so fine they read as snow.

That fluffiness is why shaved ice absorbs flavor all the way through instead of leaving you with a puddle of sweet water and a mound of plain crunch at the end.

Texture, flavor and melt

Because the ribbons are so thin, shaved ice melts on contact and feels closer to soft-serve than to ice cubes. Snow cones stay crunchy and cold much longer, which some people love.

Neither is 'better' — but if you've only ever had a gas-station snow cone, real shaved ice is a genuinely different experience.
