Shave Ice, Shaved Ice, Snow Cone: A Name Guide
Same joy, a dozen different names.
Regional names
What you call it often says where you're from. The dessert shape-shifts by region, and so does its name.
- 'Shave ice' — Hawaii's spelling, fluffy and syrup-soaked
- 'Shaved ice' — the common mainland term
- 'Snowball' or 'snoball' — New Orleans and Baltimore, ultra-fine ice
- 'Snow cone' — usually crunchier crushed ice
- 'Raspado,' 'bingsu,' 'kakigori,' 'baobing' — the global cousins
Does it matter?
Not really — but knowing the difference helps you order what you actually want. When you want fluffy snow that soaks up flavor, look for 'shave ice' or 'shaved ice,' not 'snow cone.'
